Personal website of Jack Love

Hello!

I am a mathematician, artist, and educator in San Francisco, California.

I hold a PhD in mathematics from George Mason University and a Masters in Design from California College of the Arts.

I have held faculty positions at community colleges and R1 and R2 research universities.

I co-founded the San Francisco Math Circle Summer Camp and served as Director of Outreach for Mason Experimental Geometry Lab at George Mason University.

I was an exhibiting artist at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in 2014 and 2019, and the Mathematical Association of America's Math Fest in 2025.

I am currently a private tutor, working with all ages and math courses from elementary through graduate school.

Educational Philosophy

When we look at something deeply, it cannot help but reveal itself to us. Acquiring an education is not about accumulating secondhand knowledge from expert sources; it is about seeing new ideas arise naturally within ourselves as we practice deep looking.

This is ultimately a personal experience, but a supportive community of fellow travelers is a key component. Part of deep looking is clear communication. We often do not understand our own ideas until we can communicate them to someone else, at which point the idea itself may shift and change and grow.

My job as a facilitator of this experience is to lay the foundation on which we—whether we are a class, a workshop, or a tutor-tutee dyad—build that community.
